These two are going to keep at it until one of them dies. E. Jean Carroll sued Trump, accusing him of rape decades ago. She is now 79-years-old and Trump is 77-years-old. The alleged assault or rape occurred 28 years ago.
E. Jean Carroll got her 15 minutes of fame and more with her story of a brief chat with Trump in the dressing room area of Bergdorf Goodman on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. That chat, she alleges, turned into a rape. She sued him and a federal grand jury found that Trump did not rape her but was liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The former president has been ordered to pay $5 million. Trump said at the time that he will appeal the ruling.
Now Trump has filed a lawsuit alleging that she is guilty of defamation against him.
Trump’s legal team said E. Jean Carroll “wantonly and falsely” accused Trump on “multiple occasions of committing rape,” saying those claims “constitute defamation.” Well now. His lawyers, Alina Habba an Michael Madaio, filed the lawsuit lst week. They say that rape was “clearly not committed” and pointed to the jury’s verdict last month. True enough. If she is going to keep suing Trump then he’s perfectly right to sue her right back.
His lawyers voiced some demands.
Habba and Madaio said that Carroll’s “repeated falsehoods and defamatory statements” have brought “significant harm” to Trump’s reputation, which has “yielded an inordinate amount of damages sustained as a result.”
Habba and Madaio is demanding Carroll “retract her defamatory statements” against the former president; deny all relief and purported damages sought by Carroll; and award Trump “compensatory and punitive damages.”
Habba and Madaio also demanded Trump be awarded “counsel fees, costs, and any further relief as this Court may be deem just and proper.”
He’s turning the tables. Given how long she waited to file her lawsuit and tell her story publicly, it’s all totally predictable. Trump is a litigious person. That is a well-known fact. She had to know to be prepared for his lawsuits in return.
She is suing him again, you know. Yep. She has a second defamation suit against Trump that will go to trial early next year.
E. Jean Carroll seek new damages of at least $10 million, based in part on comments Trump made at a CNN town hall last month. Remember that town hall Trump did on CNN? It happened the day after the court ruling came down. Naturally, he was asked about it.
“I never met this woman. I never saw this woman,” Trump, who launched his 2024 presidential bid in November, said in the CNN appearance, while also referring to Carroll’s claims as “fake” and “made up,” her lawyers said.
Carroll’s attorneys wrote in the motion seeking the amended complaint that Trump “doubled down on his prior defamatory statements” at the town hall.
U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan said the civil trial is scheduled for Jan. 15.
And, on it goes.
