I must admit that I am paraphrasing, not quoting, former Admiral John Kirby.
Kirby serves as Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council (that’s a mouthful!) and informally as the Press Secretary for Joe Biden when the White House needs somebody more competent than Karine Jean-Pierre.
Since KJP is in that role not to perform it but to be proof that Joe Biden truly madly and deeply loves and respects black lesbian Haitian immigrants with kinky hair, Kirby steps into the role when difficult questions about truly important matters are likely to come up.
In his role as chief flak on important matters, Kirby is often called upon to lie more convincingly than Jean-Pierre. At this job, he is, if not good, rather smooth. Unfortunately for him, Biden’s policies are almost always impossible to defend, and Kirby winds up looking like a doofus, though I suspect he is not.
A great example is his exchange with a reporter yesterday. At the White House podium, he is asked about the current high threat of terrorism that FBI Director Christopher Wray spoke about before Congress.
Wray testified that he sees flashing lights everywhere, suggesting that a terrorist attack could be imminent, and the obvious question is this: Why doesn’t President Biden close the border?

Kirby gives one of his patented ridiculous answers: Joe Biden is all about border security. Biden believes strongly in border security, Kirby tells us.
From this, we can only conclude that Joe Biden is grossly incompetent, given that the southern border is wide open, with record numbers of illegal migrants crossing at alarming rates.
By now, nobody disputes that the southern border is so porous that the tax rate is the big difference between the southern and northern sides of the line. Border patrol agents–as well as other federal law enforcement agents these days–spend most of their time helping migrants cross into the United States in order to hand them phones, money, and meaningless summons to notional asylum hearings that will never be attended.
From this, one can conclude that if Joe Biden is “all about border security,” he is even less competent at that job than he is at managing the economy or walking up and down stairs.

After a few good press hits where Kirby stood out as a beacon of moral clarity on the Israel-Hamas conflict, he is back to his job of being a paid liar for the president, and it is sad to see. As I have said before, there is some niggling suspicion in my head that Kirby is smarter than this and still has a bit of a conscience, so I was pleased to see that side of him when speaking about Israel’s war with Hamas.
But Kirby’s job isn’t to be honest, thoughtful, and straightforward. It is to lie to us more convincingly that KJP.
At that job, he barely clears the bar. Competent or not, it is impossible to defend Biden, and trying only makes you look stupid or mendacious.
And Kirby isn’t stupid.
