A group of about 55 Hollywood celebrities signed on to a letter to President Biden on Friday. They asked him to push the Israelis and Palestinians for a ceasefire.
To me, however, it looks like mostly lopsided for Israel to agree to a ceasefire.
As noted in Variety, their letter stated, “We ask that, as President of the United States, you call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost. More than 5,000 people have been killed in the last week and a half – a number any person of conscience knows is catastrophic. We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.”
The letter continued, “We urge your administration, and all world leaders, to honor all of the lives in the Holy Land and call for and facilitate a ceasefire without delay – an end to the bombing of Gaza, and the safe release of hostages.”
They added, “As of this writing more than 6,000 bombs have been dropped on Gaza in the last 12 days — resulting in one child being killed every 15 minutes.”
Yes, they say both Gaza and Israel should participate in a ceasefire but we know which side started this war. It wasn’t Israel. There is no middle ground in this. There is no room for fence-sitters here. There is an obligation for moral clarity. The letter ended with “an end to the bombing of Gaza.” What about the bombing of Israel?
The attack by Hamas on October 7 in Israel was, proportionally speaking, worse than the 9/11/01 attacks in the United States.
Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix, actress Cate Blanchett, comedian Jon Stewart, Kristen Stewart, Susan Sarandon, Riz Ahmed, and Mahershala Ali, and others signed the letter to Biden. They justify the call for a ceasefire as a way to peace between Israel and Hamas. This is dangerously ignorant and naive. A ceasefire would give Hamas time to regroup and restock its weapons. Hamas is an internationally recognized state-sponsored terrorist organization. There is no honor in Hamas. They don’t honor agreements, if they make them at all. They are evil.
Israel must do whatever it takes to destroy Hamas. Innocent Palestinians will die despite all the attempts Israel has made to encourage Gazans to evacuate the area. This war began with the murders of innocent Israelis and Americans, too.
The non-profit organization “Artist 4 Ceasefire” put together the letter. UNICEF spokesperson James Elder added a comment. He stressed the humanitarian crisis that he alleges Israel is inflicting on Palestinians in Gaza.
Elder wrote, “Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine and safe access to hospitals, following days of air strikes and cuts to all supply routes. Gaza’s sole power plant ran out of fuel Wednesday afternoon, shutting down electricity, water and wastewater treatment.”
“The humanitarian situation has reached lethal lows, and yet all reports point to further attacks. Compassion — and international law — must prevail,” he added.
Clueless leftists all. The Palestinian people elected Hamas as their political leadership. Life is hard for most Gazans because Hamas is in charge. This is not Israel’s fault. Instead of infrastructure, Hamas uses financial aid to build weapons to use against Israel. Hama hijacks humanitarian aid. They don’t care if Gazans starve or don’t have basic necessities.
“We refuse to tell future generations the story of our silence, that we stood by and did nothing. As (UN) Emergency Relief Chief Martin Griffiths told UN News, “History is watching””, they said in the letter, citing Griffiths’ comment on Monday.
Yes, history is watching. Perhaps these leftists should brush up on history. They could learn that appeasement doesn’t work. It’s deadly. This is no time for calls for appeasement – ceasefire – as Chamberlain did in the 1930s as Hitler came into power. Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas. Hamas must be destroyed.
